Getting the most from your coaching session.

Tips to get

the results

you’re looking for…

As more and more professionals discover the benefits of working with a coach, I thought it would be helpful to  provide some insight on how to get the most from your coaching sessions. I read a statistic recently that noted 73% of coaching clients say that working with a coach helps them improve their relationships, communication skills, interpersonal skills, work performance, work/life balance, and wellness.

That’s some impressive results.

And those results don’t happen by chance. Through personal experience working with coaches at various points myself, and observations I’ve made working with  my clients, I’ve put together a short list to help you get the results you’re looking for from your coaching sessions.

Come Prepared.

Clients who take the time to prepare for each session experience the most impact.

Pro-Tip:

What do you want to talk about today? Be able to answer that question before your session starts. People engage with a coach with a specific goal in mind. That’s expected. What I’m talking about here are the day-to-day situations and encounters that occur and while they may or may not be directly tied to your goal, they’ve  packed a bit of a punch. I found it helpful to keep a list handy. Maybe I found myself triggered by a situation or a someone, or the opposite was happening, and I’d mastered something that ‘d previously found challenging. Either way, I’d make a note of it and if it was still relevant to me when I attended my next session, I’d share it. Because I learned that insights can come from unexpected places.

DIG IN TO LEARN MORE

Reflect, Reflect, Reflect

You’re going to notice different perspectives on old stories and situations – the trick is to recognize when that’s happening and dig in to learn more.

Pro-Tip:
Reflection requires dedicated time and effort, and provides the key to real change. Reflection naturally occurs when your coach asks you powerful questions during your session. Create reflective moments for yourself by noticing how you’re showing up, reacting or responding. Bring these learnings and observations to your next session to discover what’s there.

Trust the process.

There is incredible power in speaking your truth out loud.

Pro-Tip:

Come to the session willing to share all parts of you. Hearing your own voice share it’s truest truths is where breakthroughs can occur, different perspectives are explored and progress in made. Remember, when you’re with your coach, you’re in a safe container.

speak up if something

isn’t working

If you aren’t getting what you want from your coaching sessions, then say so.

Pro-Tip:
From time to time any of our relationships benefits from a reset and the relationship you’ve created with your coach is no different. Are you noticing you’re rehashing the same conversation? Is your interest in coaching starting to wane? Are you being challenged in a way that brings about the change you are seeking? Bringing up concerns creates space for a reset. Know this: your coach wants the best for you, even if that means recommending that you work with someone else.

Whether your coaching journey is sponsored by your organization or is self-funded, getting the most for your time, effort and money is important to you and your coach. Don’t leave your results to chance. Be part of that 73% whose careers and lives are lived fully.
